The story of Shumba

Shumba was destined for a hunting farm. Due to the intervention of Paul Hart and the others of Drakenstein Lion Park he is now able to live out his life in safety. Born on 04 January 2005, he arrived at the Sanctuary on 19th February 2005.

After arriving at the sanctuary he has been paired with Bai and although it was not love at first sight, they are now inseparable.

Drakenstein Lion Park

Drakenstein Lion Park is situated in Paarl, South Africa, approximately 50km from Cape Town.

It was established in 1998 to provide lions in distress with sanctuary, where they could live in safety, free from abuse and persecution, and be treated with the compassion and respect they deserved.

The Park is actively involved in improving the quality of life of lions in captivity, locally as well as internationally, either by offering these animals a lifetime home or working in conjunction with other animal welfare organizations to secure a safe future for individual animals in dire need.

And we?

Two years ago I volunteered at Drakenstein Lion Park for the first time. Now I try to go there more often and help out. I've adopted Shumba and have seen he is truely enjoying himself now.

For the rest, I just love the lions and this is what I can do to help. - Hansl Kerstens

I originally heard about The Drakenstein park through my friends at British airways visiting and seeing the great work they do. A lot of parks in South Africa advertise the fact they are sanctuaries but beware, very few are and not many have the lions or other animals best interests at heart.

I wanted to help with Big Cats in particular and looked at several parks around the world. I only wanted to help with a place I knew put the interests of the animals as paramount. The Drakenstein I can say, certainly does and having now visited the park and stayed overnight, I can confirm this park is run by people who really care deeply about the welfare of the animals. There are no frills as all the money donated and raised goes direct to the animals welfare and that is what is fantastic to see.

I have followed their work for a few years and seen the rescues of some lions that have been so badly treated, it is hard to see how they survived their previous lives. Now having seen the lions at the park, they are well looked after, loved and seem very happy, it's clear to see they not only have a much better quality of life, they live with dignity. All this is possibie due to the generosity of donations from sponsors, adoptions and the love and help that Paul, Elzette and everyone there show to these beautiful animals.

I have seen changes in some of these animals at the park I didn't think were possible and that is why I wanted to help.- Joanie Bond
